The objective of this project is to investigate the direct and indirect impact of high-energy proton and electron precipitation accelerated in the terrestrial magnetosphere and magnetotail during auroral substorms and geomagnetic storms on the chemical composition, temperature and circulation of the middle atmosphere. State of the art models like UBIC, a 1-dimensional model of the D-region ion chemistry and global chemistry-climate model EMAC (ECHAM/MESSy) are used for the same. The focus is particularly on NOx and HOx species that destroy ozone in catalytic cycles in different regions of the middle atmosphere.
